Assessing the complementarity of future hybrid wind and solar
Different metrics were implemented to assess the complementarity between wind and PV solar energy resources to accurately design hybrid solutions in North America.
Han et al. have proposed a complementarity evaluation method for wind, solar, and hydropower by examining independent and combined power generation fluctuation. Hydropower is the primary source, while wind and solar participation are changed in each scenario to improve power system operation.
Wind and solar energy power systems are distinctly characterized by multiple uncertainties and limited interoperability among each other, posing greater challenges to integrated multi-energy power systems .
The joint operation of wind, solar, water, and thermal power based on pumped storage power stations is not only a supplement and improvement to traditional energy systems but also a crucial step towards a cleaner, more efficient, and more sustainable energy future.
Moreover, in 2018, Zhang et al. proposed a model to estimate the spatial and temporal complementarities of wind-solar energy. It adopted the ramp rate to evaluate the variability concisely, and used the synergy coefficient to express the mutual complementarity between wind and solar energy.
