Vanadium redox flow batteries offer better scalability, safety, and sustainability than lithium-ion batteries, at least on paper. As the world intensifies its focus on renewable energy and electric vehicles (EVs), the need for efficient, reliable, and sustainable energy storage solutions has never been more critical.
Vanadium flow batteries “have by far the longest lifetimes” of all batteries and are able to perform over 20,000 charge-and-discharge cycles—equivalent to operating for 15–25 years—with minimal performance decline, said Hope Wikoff, an analyst with the US National Renewable Energy Laboratory.
The safe and stable chemistry of the vanadium electrolyte has a far lower risk profile than other battery storage technologies. Invinity's batteries deliver 20,000+ deep discharge cycles over their lifespan, without the degradation and need for augmentation found in lithium batteries.
