Are Solar Containers Weatherproof? What You
The short response is: yes, but not all systems are equal. The performance of a solar container in surviving weather depends on
We put solar panels on a container for a guy who was powering an RV on his land. He had a generator, and the container was full of batteries to support himself. When we're on top of a container, we need to build a custom racking system to hold up more than one row of panels, which what we ended up doing for him. (See in image with tan container.)
Technically, these units are electric power stations—giant battery packs, with the ports you need to plug in solar panels for charging. They can't actually harness solar power—and thus, act as a generator—unless you have both. They also require more than the panel to fully charge and need to be plugged in before use.
In sunny conditions and moderate temperatures, this can recharge with a 200-watt solar panel in just a few hours, and can support up to 1,000 watts of solar input. The EcoFlow Delta Pro is a large portable power station with an output that rivals some gas portable generators.
Solar panel charging will take around three hours with a 200-watt panel. While smaller power stations may be able to power devices like mini-fridges, they can't do it for very long. That's why some excursions require a more powerful option. Sitting nicely in the mid-range for power capacity is this 1,152-watt-hour station, the Bluetti AC180.
