Supercapacitors
Supercapacitors (or ultracapacitors) are one of the most progressing capacitor technologies in recent years offering very high DC
Supercapacitors also known ultracapacitors and electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) are capacitors with capacitance values greater than any other capacitor type available today. Supercapacitors are breakthrough energy storage and delivery devices that offer millions of times more capacitance than traditional capacitors.
Also known as ultracapacitors, supercapacitors effectively span the gap that currently exists between electrolytic capacitors and rechargeable batteries. A typical double-layer supercapacitor is different from a conventional capacitor in two important ways.
Unlike ordinary capacitors, supercapacitors do not use a conventional solid dielectric, but rather, they use electrostatic double-layer capacitance and electrochemical pseudocapacitance, both of which contribute to the total energy storage of the capacitor.
Pseudocapacitance is electrochemical, like the inner workings of a battery. The maximum supercapacitor cell voltage ranges from 2.5 to 2.7 V. While higher voltages are possible, they come at the cost of a reduced service life.
