5G indicators: infrastructure deployment | Shaping Europe''s
Note: The following countries do not have base stations in the 26 GHz band: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czechia, Greece, France, Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, the
The 5G network coverage can be viewed here. Overall, the 5G network appears to be better developed in the northern area of Belgium, in particular in Antwerp, Ghent and coastal cities, as well as in the periphery of Brussels. This is partially due to higher population density in these areas.
5G in Belgium uses higher frequencies (30-300 GHz) than 4G, offering theoretical speeds of up to 20 Gbit/s compared with 1 Gbit/s for 4G+. This technology also has reduced latency (1 ms compared with 10 ms for 4G) and a much greater capacity for connecting devices. What are the actual 5G speeds offered by Belgian operators?
5G regulations were finally adopted on 28 November 2021. The national regulatory authority (the Belgian Institute for Postal Services and Telecommunications or BIPT) then adopted a series of individual decisions on 23 August 2022 and 16 November 2022 granting 5G user rights to the following operators:
