Renewable Energy Rule
Delivering a clean energy economy. The Bureau of Land Management has updated its regulations to promote responsible development of solar and wind energy on public lands.
Local authorities typically control siting standards. Solar or wind projects must meet standards to manage land use and regulate their development and construction. For example, there may be restrictions on how much land a project can use, where it can be built, or on wind turbine height and noise.
Model ordinances are available in 27 states for solar, 18 for wind, and 15 for both. Local authorities typically control siting standards. Solar or wind projects must meet standards to manage land use and regulate their development and construction.
State and local zoning laws and ordinances influence how and where wind and solar energy projects can be sited and deployed—which can have a measurable impact on U.S. renewable energy resource potential.
Lopez and team have conducted several studies on land use dynamics of clean energy deployment, including a recent analysis of land area requirements and land use intensity of U.S. wind energy deployments from 2000 to 2020—finding that the total U.S. wind energy footprint is equivalent to the size of New Hampshire and Vermont combined.
