Renewables companies blast Victoria''s energy transition plan
On Monday, the energy market operator announced that the timeline for completing the critical VNI West transmission project between Victoria and NSW had blown out by two years.
Australia's top clean energy companies have poured scorn on Victoria's new renewables rollout plan, which they say will threaten the state's energy security by stifling their ability to bring on new power projects before the closure of coal-fired generators.
“The plan attempts to minimise the area of Victoria required for renewable energy zones and the new transmission infrastructure needed, while also providing project developers and investors with sufficient opportunity to generate the energy we need to power homes, farms, schools, businesses, hospitals and other essential services.”
To meet Victoria's future energy needs, the plan supports the integration of: 5.8 GW of onshore wind. 2.7 GW of solar. 3.4 GW of storage. Up to 9 GW of offshore wind by 2040. Seven major transmission programs are proposed to enable this transition, including: 380 km of new lines and 430 km of upgrades. A new 500 kV link from Sydenham to Tarrone.
VicGrid has released the 2025 Victorian Transmission Plan. The plan marks a significant step in the state's renewable energy transition. It sets out the new energy infrastructure we need to keep Victoria's lights on as coal-fired power stations close. We have taken a new approach to planning renewable energy and transmission infrastructure.
